A Tradition of Artistic Growth
MusicFest Northwest (MFNW) has long been a part of artistic growth and community in Spokane. For decades, it has allowed young musicians to learn from world-class adjudicators, gain valuable performance experience, and build a lifelong love for music. The festival’s impact can be seen in the stories of its alums, who credit MusicFest with shaping their careers and fostering a deep appreciation for the arts.
Influential Alumni: Nancy O’Neill Breth and Dr. James Schoepflin
Among these alumni are Nancy O’Neill Breth and Dr. James Schoepflin, two individuals who have significantly influenced MusicFest. Nancy, a celebrated pianist and educator, recalls how the festival was pivotal in her journey. Under the guidance of Margaret Saunders Ott, she received transformative feedback from adjudicators like Dr. Bela B. Nagy, which influenced her decision to pursue music at Indiana University. Similarly, James, a distinguished clarinetist and professor, first entered MFNW in 1955 and later won the Young Artist Division while he was attending at Walla Walla University. His connection to the festival endured, serving as Reeds Division Chair for over two decades and mentoring countless young musicians.
A Lasting Impact on the Community
Both Nancy and James emphasize the lifelong value of participating in MusicFest Northwest. The festival provides a foundation far beyond the stage. James noted that many Spokane Symphony members are MusicFest alumni, demonstrating its long impact on the region’s musical landscape. Yet, its reach extends beyond those pursuing professional music or dance careers—participants of all backgrounds gain confidence, discipline, and an appreciation for the arts.
